IPL Skin Rejuvenation

IPL skin rejuvenation

When it comes to skin rejuvenation there are many treatments on offer that will stimulate collagen and elastin fibres to give you a more youthful, firm skin. However, I want to focus on the benefits of IPL skin rejuvenation.

IPL (Intense pulsed light) skin rejuvenation is a low downtime facial treatment that is effective for treating fine lines & wrinkles, redness, pigmentation, pores and skin firmness. It has been in the aesthetic industry since the early 90’s and proven to give exceptional skin rejuvenation results.

IPL is used for treating:

Pigmentation due to sundamage

Rosacea and redness

Skin laxity

How does IPL work?

sThe most simple way to explain IPL for skin rejuvenation is: IPL delivers photons (wavelengths) which is converted into thermal energy in the skin. Thermal energy will create heat in the collagen fibres causing the collagen to contract or tighten. The wavelengths are able to penetrate down into the dermis where they are absorbed by water, this triggers cytokines resulting in stimulation of collagen and elastin.

However, when treating sun damaged pigmentation the process is a little different as pigmentation is in the epidermis (top layer of the skin). IPL still delivers photons that carry heat into the skin, but instead of stimulating collagen and elastin the heat breaks up the pigment. If you have had IPL for pigmentation you would have noticed the pigmentation became dark patches and then flake off. The dark patches is the shattered pigment.

What Does an IPL Skin Rejuvenation Involve?

An IPL skin rejuvenation treatment starts with applying conductive gel on the skin, this protects the skin and aids in delivering the light into the skin. Depending on what is being treated will determine the level of downtime and pain. For stimulating collagen and elastin the sensation is a flick with a rubber band with a comfortable heat, pigmentation can feel a lot sharper as the light is hitting pigment.

What is the level of downtime?

Pigmentation has the longest downtime, after an IPL treatment pigment appears darker giving a muddy look to the skin. After a week majority of the pigment has come off and the skin looks clearer. Skin firming and tightening with IPL has minimal downtime, you can apply make up the next day.
